Prayer Shawl Ministry

What is a Prayer Shawl/Prayer Square?
The knitting or crocheting of a prayer shawl/prayer square is a spiritual practice which embodies thoughts and prayers for the recipient.
Shawls and squares are blessed at the end of the 10:30 liturgy on the 4th Sunday of every month.
They are gifts freely given with no strings attached.
Made in prayer, as prayer, for prayer, they are passed on hand-to-hand and heart-to-heart.
When we wrap ourselves in a prayer shawl or tuck a prayer square in a pocket, we are reminded of the mercy, peace, and compassion that can be found in God’s loving embrace.

How Much Do They Cost?
Prayer shawls are never purchased but are freely given.

Who Can Receive a Prayer Shawl?
They are made for anyone, anywhere.  The recipient does not have to be a parishioner, a Ukrainian, or a Catholic.  The recipient can be a man, woman, or child.  For example: recipients may be not feeling well, pregnant, leaving home for the first time, moving far away, getting married, or fighting for life after a premature birth.  They carry with them blessings and comfort.  (Also available are lap coverings for people in wheelchairs and small blankets for babies and small children.)

How Are They Presented?
We have bags with the following poems explaining what a prayer shawl/square is.

Who Does the Work?
The knitters and crocheters at St Stephen’s wish to remain anonymous.

How Can I Get Involved In The Prayer Shawl/Square Ministry?
Yarn shops have information. There is much information on line.
Choose yarn that is soft and washable.
You choose the colour and design.
Start to knit or crochet.
Pray as you work.
Bring your shawl to church for blessing on the 4th Sunday of the month.

What Do I Do In Order To Receive A Shawl or Square For Myself Or To Take To Someone?
Contact St. Stephen's office at : [email protected] or  403-249-4818, ext. 0

Who Chooses Which Shawl Goes To Which Recipient?
We leave that up to the Holy Spirit.

How Can I Support This Ministry?
Donations to the ministry are gratefully accepted and can be made out to “St Stephen Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic Church – Shawl Ministry.” (Each shawl requires $50.00-$75.00 of yarn).
